This department started functioning as a separate entity, with the foundation of college in year 1972. From year 1972 to 1978, this department remained under Pathology department. This department does bacteriological culture of OPD and IPD patients of Nehru Hospital. It also participates in thesis and other research works of other departments as and when needed.

Activities Organized by Department:
- Massive Diagnostic Reach: Performed over 1.1 million RT-PCR tests for COVID-19 in 2021.
- Annual Volume: Conducts more than 40,000 microbiological tests every year.
- Bacteriology Expertise: Successfully completed 18,655 bacteriology tests, including 2,880 critical surveillance tests for OTs and ICUs in 2025-26.
- AMR Monitoring: Quarterly monitoring of antimicrobial resistance patterns to guide hospital antibiotic policy.
- Infection Control: Active leadership in the Hospital Infection Control Committee (HICC) and implementation of Antimicrobial Stewardship programs.
- Strategic Collaboration: Partnered with AIIMS, Gorakhpur since 2024 as an ICMR secondary care site for AMR research.
- Staff Training: Regularly organizes quarterly training sessions on Biomedical Waste Management and Infection Prevention.
Accredited Facilities:
- BSL-3 Laboratory: ICMR-approved facility for high-risk viral diagnosis.
- NABL Accredited: State Reference Laboratory for HIV diagnosis and research.
- TB Centre: Accredited Intermediate Research Lab (IRL) under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme, Central TB Division, NHM (Govt. of India).
CME/workshop: Training Program
- The Department regularly conducts CMEs, workshops, and training programs to enhance scientific skills among healthcare workers and promote public health awareness.
- CME on Leishmaniasis (Kala-azar) (2024) was organized under the Neglected Tropical Diseases initiative of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, at Gorakhpur.
- Workshop-cum-training programs on the CY-TB skin test (2025) were conducted for clinicians and healthcare workers under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme.
- Biannual HIC EQAS workshops were conducted through the State Reference Laboratory under UPSACS and NACO (MoHFW), organized by the Department of Microbiology, BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur.

Facilities to Patients:
1. Bacteriological Culture of blood, respiratory samples, body fluids, urine, stool of patients of OPD and Indoor of Nehru Hospital.
2. Serological test of CSF for Japanese Encephalitis, since year 2005.
3. Serological test for Dengue (IgM ELISA) and viral load testing for Hepatitis B and C (PCR).
3. Free HIV test facility, for patients under ICTC programme, by NACO (National AIDS Control Organisation).
4. Test of other STD (Sexually Transmitted Infection) is conducted, in collaboration with Department of Skin and Venereal Diseases.
5. TB testing for pulmonary and extrapulmonary samples received from nearby districts.
6. KOH mount and fungal culture of skin scrapings, sputum, hair, nail of OPD patients and IPD of Nehru Hospital.
